HP Mentor A Teacher Program

Reimagining schools for the betterment of student learning! The 1MT HP Mentor A Teach Program pairs experienced mentors with teachers in underserved communities, enhancing skills and boosting student outcomes. Accomplishing maximum impact on student learning depends on collaborative teacher teams, guided by excellent leaders, setting high expectations, and continuously evaluating and improving their teaching strategies. This initiative makes quality education more accessible, bridging educational gaps and promoting academic success.

About the Program

Mission: to build a critical mass of highly trained and enterprising education changemakers who will lead grassroots improvement within their communities.

HP launched HP Mentor A Teacher (MAT) in collaboration with 1MT and Girl Rising in October 2021.  HP employees' mentor Blackbelts and Learning Hub Coordinators (LHCs) - key areas covered are gender equity, digital literacy, leadership, and success mindset.

During the six-month program, mentors and mentees engaged curriculum around gender equity, digital literacy, leadership, and success mindset. Monthly Mentor Advisory Panel conducted by HP executes with HPMAT Cohort mentors.

The Mentorship Program is Built on Three Key Pillars.

  • Increase gender awareness, sensitization and education amongst teachers by leveraging resources provided by GR.

  • Increase teachers' leadership abilities and success mindset by utilizing HP LIFE and additional GR programming.

  • Establish a dynamic framework enabling 1MT to scale and disseminate the program globally, transforming mentees into mentors and driving impactful change throughout the organization.

“At HP, we believe one thoughtful idea has the power to change the world. I am quite convinced that this Mentor a Teacher program is one little spark that can engulf not just the nation of Nigeria but indeed Africa as we try to bridge the digital divide and provide digital equity across the continent. It’s a good thing we are starting with the foundation of education, which is the teachers, because if we change the teachers, if we empower the teachers, if we ensure that they are able to adapt to the dynamic environment in which we find ourselves today, then we would have solved half of the problem.”

-Emanuel Asika, Country Head for HP Nigeria.

HPMAT Overview

About the program: The HP Mentor a Teacher Program is a collaboration between HP, GR, and 1MT, aimed at bringing inclusive content and curriculum to classrooms and educators in Nigeria and beyond. Anchored on 4 pillars, including gender equity, relationships and digital inclusion, leadership development and success mindset, this program helps cover key areas that are not covered in standard training programs for educators and will provide participants with the skills, resources, and knowledge to empower girls and advance their rights to quality education. Participants will play a crucial leadership role in cascading this program, in the process creating a critical mass of highly capable educators – educators who demonstrate the principles of Powerful Learning in their teaching and learning practice; educators who can design learning experiences that are personal and accessible; authentic and challenging; collaborative and connected; and inquisitive and reflective.
